Hello! After delving into my culinary adventures, let's explore another” jam” of mine: language learning. While I may come across as a polymath, I must clarify that I am not. Besides being fluent in English and conversational in a few regional languages, my proficiency in German is at a beginner level. However, the highlight of this piece is my journey in mastering simplified Mandarin, which I've been diligently pursuing for the past two and a half years.
For those intrigued by the world of language learning or considering a dive into Mandarin, this article is for you. But fear not, even if languages aren't your thing, I promise there's something here to pique your interest and keep you engaged. Let's explore together!
Don't let the struggle of finding the right place deter you from pursuing language learning. Trust me, the right opportunity will come your way (manifesting the belief that it will find you). Despite searching high and low across Pune, my city, I couldn't seem to find a suitable language class that aligned with my preferences. Even dragging my best friend along on these quests didn't yield success. In her exasperation, at the last place, which in all honesty was a bit too dingy, she declared, "I don’t care how much you want to learn this language, you are not coming here, especially not alone."
Then, just before the second lockdown hit, I stumbled upon a post in one of my networking groups by the Taipei Taiwan Trade Center: "Apply for free Mandarin classes." It seemed too good to be true, but there was no mention of payment in the form. Figuring it was worth the gamble (without realizing I was giving away a lot of personal information), I applied. A week later, I received a call from Miss Tai Yui Hui, and before I knew it, I was enrolled in Mandarin classes with a decent-sized group, all sponsored for over eight months.
Online classes have become a staple, especially in the wake of COVID-19, and they can actually be quite remarkable. Initially, I was hesitant about virtual learning, but with no financial risk and ample time on my hands (thanks again, pandemic), I decided to give it a shot. Having previously attended in-person language classes for German, where interactions and cultural sessions were the norm, I questioned how much we could accomplish online. However, I was pleasantly surprised.
Despite the virtual setting, I never felt disconnected or isolated. The online classes were immersive, with plenty of opportunities for participation. From engaging in role plays and simulated situations to exploring culinary delights together (albeit virtually), the experience was far more enriching than I anticipated.
Finding a great teacher is crucial, and I'm fortunate to have found the best. I don't say this lightly or with the naivety of a child who thinks everything they have is the greatest – I genuinely mean it. After completing the sponsored course, I reached out to my instructor and pleaded for continued guidance. Initially, we started as a group but eventually transitioned to individual classes without compromising the quality of instruction.
The learning experience remained vibrant and engaging throughout. Our lessons are conducted in dynamic and interactive ways, ensuring that the language comes alive. For instance, during conversation practice, we recently delved into the Ambani pre-wedding affair, which takes on a whole new vibe in Mandarin. We've also enjoyed activities like Mandarin "spot the differences," which, despite its playful nature, proves remarkably effective for vocabulary acquisition. In the session where I learnt weather, I was playing a weather reader reporting various weather conditions across the globe. The classes do push you to thoroughly immerse yourself in the language. Additionally, I receive extensive worksheets to reinforce each topic thoroughly.
Don't let age deter you from diving into language learning. The dynamics shifted significantly for me as I transitioned from being the youngest learner in my German classes to the oldest in my Mandarin class. Initially, this shift may seem daunting, perhaps even raising doubts about the challenge ahead. And yes, it is indeed more challenging this time around. With less time for practice and the scientifically proven fact that language absorption slows with age, the journey may feel uphill.
However, perseverance and consistency are key. Despite the obstacles, dedication to regular practice pays off in the end. However, with dedication and consistency, progress is achievable. Practice becomes your ally, and in the end, that's all you truly need.
Explore diverse avenues for learning. My teacher has been invaluable, in sharing accessible music videos that aid understanding. While it may feel cringe-worthy, watching sentimental shows on Netflix has surprisingly helped me grasp Chinese words pronounced in various accents. Additionally, I follow a variety of Instagrammers—after all, why not make my endless scrolling on Instagram a bit more productive? Every little bit of exposure counts towards language acquisition.
I trust this article has provided both insight and enjoyment. If you're on your own language-learning journey, I'm curious to hear about your experiences. Do online classes spark joy for you as well? Share your thoughts!
